SPECIAL CEMENT WITH A VERY HIGH SLAG CONTENT FOR ROAD CONSTRUCTION

CIMENTS SPECIAUX A TRES HAUTE TENEUR EN LAITIER POUR UTILISATION ROUTIERE

The standard gravel-cement technique offers various advantages regarding cost, availability of the binder, and mechanical performance. Unfortunately these advantages must be assessed against the disadvantages originating from the cement itself. The type of portland cement used, which is characterized by rapid setting especially during the heat of the summer, was often subject to difficult compaction, if laying was not carried out immediately. Two main improvements to the technique are described: (1) the use of cement specially designed for gravel-cement mixtures, which contains a very high proportion of coarsely ground granulated slag; (2) the introduction of retarders at the mixing plant. This report describes the studies of and experimental sites using high-slag-content cement. It clearly shows the advantages of the mixtures such as Extended duration of workability, lower sensitivity to Water etc. /TRRL/
