STUDDED TYRES. 1975 EXPERIMENT. TESTS ON CAR CIRCULAR TEST TRACK

LES PNEUS A CRAMPONS, EXPERIMENTATION 1975, ESSAIS SUR LE CARROUSEL TOURISME

A five-year study of the effect of studded tyres on the heavy vehicle circular test track in Pont-a-Mousson, was followed by tests on the new car circular test track during the 1974-1975 winter. This new equipment enables 8 models of studs to be tested on 8 circular tracks simultaneously. The tracks have a diameter from 26 to 30 M. The different studs are fitted to tyres 165 x 15, mounted on standard peugeot 404 suspensions. At the end of the tests, a new relation was proposed between the wear of the surfacing and the characteristics of studs and tyres; furthermore the same stud used on a heavy vehicle tyre can use the surfacing up to thirty times more than if it was fitted to a car tyre. /TRRL/
