THE ROLE OF INDUSTRIAL LIME WHEN USED WITH POZZOLAN MATERIALS

ROLE DES CHAUX INDUSTRIELLES DANS LEURS EMPLOIS AVEC LES MATERIAUX A CARACTERE POUZZOLANIQUE

Materials with pozzolan characteristics can gain hydraulic properties through addition of lime. Most of them are or can be used in road construction, thus enabling industrial by-products and low-quality natural materials to be utilized. Studies have shown that the main role of the lime was to help setting and hardening by forming hydrated calcium silicates and aluminates. They also demonstrated that the effect of slaked lime on the behaviour of materials laid varies according to the manufacturing conditions of the lime. For instance, it was proved that in the stabilization of pozzolan materials from Auvergne, the short- and medium-term mechanical strength was markedly higher when stabilization was carried out with slaked lime containing some of the ingredients of portland cement rather than practically pure fat lime. Attention is drawn to the importance of determining the mineralogical composition of lime. This determination will enable selection criteria to be established for a given road construction technique. /TRRL/
