Welded sections make towers that support the nation's first aerial tramway. All of the structural steel for the towers was ASTM A 588 Grade 50 weathering steel. Minimum Charpy V-notch requirements was 15 ft-lb at 40 f (20 J at 4 C) for plate 2 inches (5 cm) and under, and 20 ft-lb at 40 F (27 J at 4 C) for plate over 2 inches. E70 and E80 series shielded metal arc welding electrodes handled the manual work. Bare electrode and granular flux for submerged arc welding conformed to AWS A 5. 17. The flux was class F 70 or F 80. Operators welded to prevent lamellar tearing.
