SANTA FE TRIES "ARTICULATED SKELETON" FOR TOFC/COFC LOADS

A lightweight unit train of skeleton-car sections has been developed by Santa Fe for handling trailers and containers. The 51.5-foot segments, consisting of center sills semipermanently joined by articulated connections, are carried by a conventional truck under each articulation. The road is seeking a vehicle which offers low first cost, reduces locomotive fuel consumption, will reduce both loss and damage in either trailers or containers, and has the ability to accomodate 45-foot trailers.
