FIRST CRUDE OIL BURNERS LAUNCHED
A 6RD68 Sulzer diesel engine was installed on the 115,000 dwt motor tanker "Conoco Espana" capable of burning Dhahran crude oil. The oil used had a specific gravity of 0.814 at 23 deg C; gross and net calorific values of 10,950 and 10,232 Kal/Kg and viscosities ranging from 4.03 cST at 23 deg to 1.68 cSt at 80 deg C. Sulphur and carbon were low at 0.61 and 1.42 per cent. To prevent gasification, tanks were kept under a slight pressure and gas collecting hoods were placed over pumps, injectors etc. No difficulties were experienced with the engine up to full power during testing.
