THE GLACIER-PILGRIM "COASTGUARD" STERNGEAR SYSTEM
The Glacier Metal Co., Deep Sea Seals Ltd, and Pilgrim Engineering Developments Ltd have together developed the Glacier-Pilgrim "Coastguard" sterngear system. It is designed to prevent oil leakage into the sea (a matter of intensified importance in view of stricter anti- pollution regulations) and to prevent the entry of sea water into the bearing, regardless of wear. It can be used in either a single- or a two- bush arrangement, is supplied as a complete unit with seals, bearings (white metal or plastic), header tank, and connections. It has Lloyd's Register approval. At the after end of the unit, there is a double lip seal of special design on the oil side and a face-type seal on the water side. The inboard oil seal has a single lip. There is a single header- tank, fitted about 1 m above the shaft; complicated pressure-balance arrangements are avoided. Oil leakage from the seals is drained to a bilge or slop tank. All leakages are visible from a control panel, and the system is "monitored" from on board.
