CONSTRUCTION OF VERY LARGE TANKERS IN TWO PARTS

The decision to adopt a two-part building technique is explained and there is a description of the facilities which were created for that purpose. Sections of the paper are then devoted to the design of the Group's first VLCC and its construction on the building berth. Particular attention is paid to the special launching considerations involved in this two-part building technique and the paper goes on to describe in detail the operation of joining up the two units. The author concludes with the view that the Group's decision to build VLCCs in this way was the correct one and he acknowledges the efforts of all concerned in ensuring its practical success.
