SHIP SPEEDS IN RESTRICTED WATERWAYS
The author shows that the behavior of ships in inland waterways is markedly different from that experienced in the open sea. The notable differences include the pronounced water circulation around the hull, the unusual pattern of waves in the vicinity of the stern, and the substantial increase in power needed to maintain the same speeds attainable in open waters.
