BROSTROM LABOUR EXPERIMENT

This experiment involves training some ship's officers and crew members to handle both engine and deck duties on two 12,600 dwt ships. The two basic aims are to reduce operating costs and streamline crew organizations. Care was taken to sell the idea to unions and officers' organizations. The Captain, chief engineer, first officer and first engineer will retain their traditional roles. Two other officers, one a mate, one an engineer, will be trained in each others' work. Seamen and engine room hands will also be interchanged and trained in each others duties. The training program is divided into shipboard and shoreside phases. Unique in this experiment is a shipboard planning committee. The experiment will run through 1972.
