ICE PROBLEMS IN LOCKS AND CANALS ON THE SAINT LAWRENCE RIVER

This paper describes the major problems related to operating locks and canals under the conditions encountered during the opening and closing periods and the improvements which have been carried out to minimize the effects of cold weather. The improvements consisted of ice flushing systems, installation of compressed air systems, and insulation of lower mitre gates.
