A new concept in gas turbines has recently been developed using a closed cycle (based on the Brayton cycle) fueled by an external heat source. This external-combustion concept frees gas turbines from the restrictions of petroleum-based fuels and provides new opportunity for operation with coal or nuclear power. Marine and space applications are described.
