SINGLEPOINT MOORINGS MULTIPLY

Currently there are about 65 SPM's in use around the world. Most of them are located in the Far and Middle East where port facilities are minimal, or do not exist, especially for very large tankers. In addition to the present application of SPM's, there appear to be other markets developing for them. These new areas are in unloading and loading slurry cargos, such as iron ore and bauxite; food bulk products, such as grain, salt and molasses; liquefied gases and ammonia; and miscellaneous bulk materials, such as wood pulp. Each of these products and the different types of ships involved in carrying them required a specialized SPM design. This article discusses the design requirements for various SPM systems and details six new designs for SPM's.
