MODEL TEST SERVICES FOR THE OFFSHORE INDUSTRY

The brochure describes the model basin designed specifically to answer the needs of the offshore industry. The depth and width of the tank insure that wall and bottom effects are negligible. An efficient wave absorber eliminates wave reflections. A 30 foot deep pit permits the testing of riser systems and structures designed for deep water. Shallow water tests are conducted in the deep tank utilizing a false bottom or by adjusting water depth to the appropriate level and using wave generating equipment specifically adapted to shallow water. Wind and current generating facilities exist for situations where this type of testing is appropriate. Wind tunnel testing can be arranged at other facilities in the area on a sub-contract basis. Complete facilities exist for fabricating models out of wood, plastic, polyurethane foam, and a variety of metals including lightweight models of aluminum. Structural models are produced to model the stiffness of critical members and bonded strain gages are used extensively to monitor loads and stresses. A wide variety of the latest instruments are used to obtain data from models: motion sensors, accelerometers, inclinometers, load cells, gyros, etc. The instrumentation shop manufactures specialized instruments for models as demanded by test requirements. Model test data is processed in either of two PDP8/E computers. Real time data processing is utilized for both regular and random seas to provide timely test data throughout a test program. Analog oscillographic strip charts are also available. Test documentation is available on 16 mm color and black and white motion picture film at continuously variable frame rates from 2 to 500 frames per second. Black and white and color video recordings are also available in reels and cassettes that store up to one hour of test time.
