THE STUDY OF WIRE CABLE AND DOUBLE BEAM TYPES OF DESIGN IN MEDIAN BARRIERS
VERGLEICH VON SEILZAAN UND DOPPELPLANKE ANHAND VON UNFALLEN AN MITTELSCHRANKEN
This report contains the results of an investigation about the effectiveness of the two different types of median barriers: the wire rope barrier (system "British Ropes") and the two offset metal beam barrier. The ISETH (Institut fur Strassen-, Eisenbhan- und Felsbau an der ETH Zurich) has analised all the accidents at median barriers which were reported to the police, that happened on the national highway N1 between Bern and Dietkon from 1969 to 1975. This research was essentially done according to the following criteria: Beahviour of the vehicle during and after the collision with the median barrier. Personal injuries due to accidents at the median barrier. Repair costs of the barriers and of the vehicles. Furthermore some other criteria were investigated which have only a limited connection with the barriers but which are of importance for a general accident analysis, as for example the local distribution of accidents. /Author/
