ACCIDENT SITUATION ON THE CARRIAGEWAYS OF SECTIONS OF GERMAN MOTORWAYS
UNFALLSITUATION AUF DEN RICHTUNGSFAHRBAHNEN VON BAB-ABSCHNITTEN
The occurrence of accidents on sections of two German motorways was studied over a fairly long period of time. With respect to time of day it was discovered that the accident rate was highest between 6 p.m. And 7 p.m., and was lowest between 4 a.m. And 5 a.m. This was observed on the German motorway a5 on the basle to karlsruhe carriageway. On the a1 osnabrueck-muenster motorway, in both directions, the accident rate is also highest between 6 p.m. And 7 p.m. However, an exceptionally large number of accidents also occur between midnight and 1 a.m. When the accident rate is related to the day of the week, it appears that on the A5 the greatest number of accidents occur between Wednesday and Friday. The weekend plays no decisive role there, as it does on the a1 where most accidents occur between Friday and Sunday. An attempt was also made to investigate the accident rate according to the month of the year. /TRRL/
