Most of the major naval vessels at present on order for European and South American powers will employ some form of combined propelling machinery in which aeroderived gas turbines are used alternatively with lightweight diesel engines or other aero turbines of lower power. This abstract from a paper traces the development of the gear system for naval vessels from the last of the steam frigates to the present COGOG destroyers.
