A SIX YEARS SURVEY WITH VANE TEST AND CONE PENETROMETER TO TEST COHESION VALUE OF A SOFT CLAY SOIL DURING ROAD EMBANKMENT CONSTRUCTION

SIX ANS DE SUIVI AVEC DES ESSAIS SCISSOMETRIQUES ET DES ESSAIS DE PENETRATION STATIQUE DE L'EVOLUTION DE LA COHESION D'UNE ARGILE MOLLE PENDANT LA CONSTRUCTION D'UN REMBLAI ROUTIER

The achievement of the earthworks comprising dredging, silting methods and vertical drains for the new road between Douala and Yaounde were conducted phase by phase. Every phase was controlled by tassometer and piezometer and by cone penetration test and vane test. During embankment phases, the value of the undrained cohesion went down instead of increasing as expected. Surprisingly, this hazardous situation did not give way to a failure but design needed to be changed.
