This article discusses standards and protocols as they relate to ITS technologies and how they will enable deployment of these systems into the 21st century. ITS standards include specifying data content and communicating that data content using a particular communications technology. Existing standards for communications and computer equipment are being used "as is" for transportation applications, in conjunction with new ITS standards for data content that are specific to ITS. New safety standards are also being developed for the placement of new in-vehicle and roadside equipment and for user interfaces of that equipment. The U.S. Department of Transportation ITS Joint Program Office is currently helping to accelerate development of consensus-based ITS standards in cooperation with 5 U.S. Standards Development Organizations.
