In-vehicle navigation is eagerly awaited but a vital component is hindering the development of this technology. Among the biggest obstacles to growth in the intelligent transportation systems market, in general, and in-vehicle navigation, specifically, is the lack of a standard governing the creation of a "universal" map CD-Rom. A solution appears to be at least some years off and would require the standardization of both the application programming interface and the physical data storage format. This short article describes the SDAL Format of physical map data storage and the entities involved in its development.
