This introduction discusses the U.S. Department of Transportation initiated Intelligent Vehicle Highway System (IVHS) which later became the Intelligent Transportation System (ITS). ITS consists of in-vehicle systems and roadside infrastructure. Development of both components is well underway. The wireless intersection controller will employ dedicated short range and cell phone communications technologies to talk to vehicles and maintain contact with other wireless smart intersections. Automated intersections are at the center of future infrastructure and will save lives through crash avoidance technology and reduce pollution by optimizing traffic flow.
