The National Science Foundation is funding the creation of a bridge assessment database that holds promise for setting priorities among the bridges requiring repair in the United States. Researchers are currently developing technology for an evaluation tool that will compare life-cycle costs associated with various repair procedures. The assessment technology is being developed in the form an of expert system, which incorporates artificial intelligence. It is hoped that the result will assist decision makers in selecting cost-effective repair options.
