GENERAL PURPOSE PROGRAM OF PLANE STRESS ANALYSIS BY FINITE ELEMENT METHOD, AND ITS APPLICATION

Recently the structural analysis by finite element method has passed from the stage of research and seems to be ready for practical use. Nevertheless, various problems remain to be solved. For instance, it is imperative to develop a computer program with large capacity which can be put to practical use. Even if such a program should be developed, we are still confronted with the fact that we cannot work out complex problems because it takes several months to prepare the input data for calculation. Accordingly, it is necessary to develop a large enough program whose scale must be balanced with the faculty of saving labour in preparation of input data and in analysis of calculated results. Taking this into consideration, the authors developed a general purpose computer program designated ZPLATE for plane stress analysis of plates through finite element method. This report will serve to describe the outlines of the ZPLATE program with some examples of its application. The program is prepared for analysis of elastic plate structures under plane stress conditions, and especially a program for three-dimensional structures constructed with plates or orthotropic plates will be distinctively useful for analysis of ship hull structures.
