AUTOMATIC VEHICLE RECOGNITION BY SILHOUETTE THEORY

A new image processing approach for the recognition of a vehicle is proposed. In this approach, a vehicle is recognized by using its side-silhouette, which is different from the conventional vehicle recognition approaches that are essentially based on a subtraction of gray levels. Some vehicle recognition experiments were performed to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach. Satisfactory experimental results were obtained even under some bad test conditions, such as "shadow", "overlapping" and "low contrast", under which the conventional approaches cannot work well.
