ISTP LIGHTWEIGHT RAILWAY TRANSPORTATION MONITOR AND CUSTOMER INFORMATION SYSTEM

Computer based monitoring of rail traffic and electronic customer information can now be integrated in a lightweight standard platform computer system. ISTP (Information System for Transportation of Passengers) is developed and implemented for the passenger traffic section of German railways (Deutsche Bahn AG, short DB). ISTP integrates online passenger traffic control with data-transmission to various customer interfaces in train stations, Internet, and even running trains. ISTP is completely based on Lotus Notes and Java. Server and client computers are out-of-the-box IBM-compatible Windows-NT machines. In the DB-implementation data-transmission is provided by the corporate IP-network. However, bandwidth requirement is low, so ISTP can even run on switched telephone lines. The scalable distributed architecture handles even large railway systems like Deutsche Bahn. Low data-transmission requirements, cheap hardware components and the standard software platform make ISTP also an option for smaller railway systems. For the covering abstract see IRRD E102946.
