REPORT ON THE OKAYAMA INFORMATION HIGHWAY PROJECT - DEVELOPMENT OF ITS IN A REGIONAL CITY

The Okayama National Highway Work Office, cooperating with Okayama Prefecture Government, is promoting the Okayama Information Highway Project which aims to establish: (1) greater service to highway users; (2) efficient management of highway infrastructures; and (3) information network among highways and regions. The project uses optical fiber network for highway management, prefectural government WAN, and private CATV networks to provide various information such as: (1) highway information; (2) administrative information among authorities; and (3) general information between users and authorities. Also, after its completion, it is expected to: (1) reduce extreme fluctuations in traffic volumes; (2) strengthen the service to the highway and public transit users; (3) resume the highway traffic quickly after the accidents or disasters; and (4) simplify the official procedures of applications concerning the highway usage.
