ANALYSIS OF TRAFFIC FLOW VARIATIONS IN RELATION TO TRAFFIC INFORMATION SERVCICES AND SIGNAL CONTROL

Many traffic information services have been put into operation recently in Japan, including VICS, which is one of the Japanese ITS systems. The Japan Traffic Management Technology Association studied the effect on traffic conditions which results from the operation of signal control systems, when changes in the flow of automobiles are affected by traffic information. The authors studied the relationship between the presentation of information and signal control in terms of physical phenomena such as pulsations and hunting and the practical effects of evaluating the time-integrals of congestion lengths. A simulator based on a model of a road branching into two was developed and used for the analysis. For the covering abstract see IRRD E102946.
