IMPROVING TRAVELLER INFORMATION AND ROUTE GUIDANCE BY USE OF AUTOMATED VEHICLE RECOGNITION

This paper contains subjects related to traffic flow, route guidance and traveller information on highway E18 through the south-eastern part of Norway. On days when capacity problems and unstable traffic flow conditions are likely to occur, continuous registrations of both point and section data to describe the traffic flow conditions are recorded. Equipment and methods to obtain section data are based on absolute as well as relative recognition of vehicles, and the experiences gained are discussed. Variable message signs for route guidance and traveller information are based upon the registrations. Both qualitative and quantitative information are used. The experiences with section related data and quantitative traveller information (delay) are very positive. For the covering abstract see IRRD E102946.
