IMPROVEMENT OF THE ON-RAMP CONTROL ALGORITHM CONSIDERING THE MERGING CAPACITY CONSTRAINT

The existing metering control methods, such as the time of day (TOD) control and the adaptive control, cannot produce an exact solution because the time varying characteristics are ignored using a constant value as the merging lane capacity. For this reason, this study examined the characteristics of merging lane capacity and improved the ramp-metering algorithm to consider the variant characteristics of ramp volume and the merging lane capacity. And, the effectiveness of the suggested algorithm is evaluated through the field data analysis. According to the results of this study, a new LP model considering a variable merging capacity model is superior to the existing models in terms of good adaptability to the variation of traffic pattern at merge area and the effectiveness of traffic operation due to less breakdown occurrences.
