DEVELOPMENT OF STEERING ASSIST SYSTEM (STAR) FOR THE LANE DEPARTURE WARNING

This paper provides descriptions of studies conducted on the functions of STAR (STeering Assist & Robust) system developed as a lane departure warning/lane keeping assist system to assist drivers' steering operations in the lateral direction. The system consists of a lane detection sensor (CCD-camera and image processing), front steering actuator, controller, etc. Functions of the system are to generate a warning sound when the vehicle is likely to depart from a proper lane, and to provide an additional torque to the steering wheel to resume its position toward the center of the lane so that the lane keeping becomes easier for the driver. The additional torque to be generated by the system is set at an appropriate level so that it does not alter the behaviour of the vehicle (radically). The effective control (warning) timing was studied by means of a driving simulator, and the effectiveness has been verified through road tests. For the covering abstract see IRRD E102946.
