CHANNEL TUNNEL RAIL LINK - ONE YEAR ON

This article reports progress on the construction of the first section of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link (CTRL), which began one year ago, in October 1999; it includes a route map. This section covers the 74km between the Channel Tunnel and Fawkham Junction. When it opens in 2003, Eurostar journey times to Paris and Brussels will be about 20min quicker. When the whole CTRL is opened around 2007, a further 15min will be saved, thus halving the present journey time between London and the Channel Tunnel; journey times from various parts of Kent to London St Pancras will also be reduced dramatically. The article details the following parts of work on the first section: (1) the line through North Kent from Fawkham to the River Medway, Contract 330, where there was the greatest early progress in construction; (2) the 1255m long Medway Bridge, Contract 350; (3) the 3.2km long North Downs Tunnel, Contract 410; (4) the line through Mid Kent from the North Downs to Ashford, contract 420; (5) the works around Ashford, including a 1.7km long cut-and-cover tunnel; (6) the line through East Kent from Ashford to the Channel Tunnel, Contract 440; and (7) the CTRL's interchange with the North Chatham Line at Fawkham. It also outlines the project's next steps, and the work that will be done on CTRL's second section.
