TRAFFIC INFORMATION SYSTEM ON THE EXPRESSWAY IN THE EVENT OF THE NAGANO OLYMPIC GAMES

The 18th Winter Olympic games was held on Feb. 7 through Feb. 22 with 16 days period in Nagano Prefecture. In order to alleviate expected traffic congestion near the Olympic venues, many traffic operation programs were implemented in the game period by relevant public transportation bodies. One of them is to provide traffic information to vehicle drivers on the expressways that was taken by the Japan Highway Public Corporation. The paper summarized methodological approaches including selection of traffic information and information system, and post-evaluation of the traffic information strategies. As a result, these strategies worked efficiently in the game period, and no serious traffic congestion was observed not only at the tollgates but also on the expressway network near the venues.
