FRENCH ON TRACK TO OPEN RAILWAY TEST CENTER

A $25-million railway test center scheduled to open in January 2000 in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais area of northern France should help European rail companies deliver fully operational train sets to customers more quickly. The 118 acre (48 ha) facility will include three test tracks: a speed track to check traction and braking systems, an endurance track to monitor the performance of mechanical and electrical equipment, and a circuit for testing driverless automatic control systems.
