ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES IN CONSTRUCTION. A STRATEGIC REVIEW

This report has been prepared as the final part of a four-part initiative focused on "Environmental Issues in Construction" (RP573). The four outputs of project RP573 are: (1) a review of published environmental research and implementation activites within the construction industry; (2) a questionnaire survey of the state of environmental initiatives within the construction industry and of suitable sustainability indicators for the civil engineering sector; (3) a tiered system of suggested sustainability indicators for the civil engineering sector; (4) a strategic review - a general report, for the construction industry, providing guidance on the implementaiton of environmental initiatives and their suitability for the industry. This report integrates the findings of the first three outputs. In particular, it highlights the gaps in industry knowledge in respect of certain environmental issues and examines the relative importance of these issues as derived from the questionnaire study. It assesses how well the proposed indicators, developed at two workshops, cover and respond to those issues in terms of setting objectives for sustainable development. Finally, it discusses how next to promote action on environmental issues within construction. This takes the form of a ten-point plan directed at the construction industry, government, clients and the research community. (A)
