LIGHT RAPID TRANSIT SYSTEMS IN BRITAIN AND FRANCE: WHAT LESSONS CAN WE LEARN?

Many cities in Britain and throughout Europe are considering introducing Light Rapid Transit (LRT) systems. This paper presents five case studies of LRT schemes in Britain and France describing the various techniques employed for funding the schemes, the transport policy background and the effects of the schemes on the local environment, economy and modal shift from car to public transport. The paper then concludes by setting out what lessons have been learnt from the case studies and how they affect the options for other cities wishing to introduce LRT. For the covering abstract see IRRD E102382.
