EVALUATION OF INTELLIGENT SPEED ADAPTATION IN URBAN AREAS

The results from the project "Evaluation of Intelligent Speed Adaptation (ISA) in Urban Areas" show that even low level of implementation have an impact on traffic safety for vulnerable road users. More significant impact is reached if 50 percent of the vehicles are equipped with ISA and it isalso shown that short time headway increases the travel speed without reducing the traffic safety effects for vulnerable road users. The average speed at selected measurements points could be up to 20 percent depending on implementation levels and the ambition of the road authorities. The travel speed is reduced by 8 percent using "conventional" ISA, but by introducing short time headway the travel speed will not be changed. It is quite unique that within this study an attempt has been made to model accidents between vehicles and pedestrians. Several different critical situations have been modelled using an object that represents a pedestrian making mistakes. The results from simulations show that even low levels of implementation (20 percent) could dramatically reduce certain types of accidents, while other types of accidents are not influenced by ISA introduction.
