GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY INSTITUTIONALIZATION IN THE NATION'S STATES AND LOCALITIES
A leading challenge for the nation's state and local governments in the 21st century will be to effect and institutionalize coordinated approaches to geographic information technology (GIT), including remote sensing, geographic information systems and the use of Global Positioning System(GPS). To best incorporate and utilize the GIT, attention, investigation and action is needed in four areas: 1. local and state governments, responsible for the development and maintenance of public services and the infrastructure, must be involved in the automation, integration and access of data. 2. for the best results, public leadership, official policy direction and institutionalized internal and intergovernmental efforts must be expanded. 3. the data contained in GIT must be accurate, current and integrated within and between local and state governments and 4. cost recovery issues for the GIT systems should be examined in light of the information contained and the benefits a coordinated information system provides to all levels of local and state government.
