BEHAVIOUR AND MODELLING OF RIGID, SEMI-RIGID AND FLEXIBLE PILES UNDER HORIZONTAL LOADING
COMPORTEMENT ET MODELISATION DE PIEUX RIGIDES, DE RIGIDITE FINIE ET SOUPLES SOUS CHARGES HORIZONTALES
The results of stage horizontal loading tests on 24 piles with 1 m (3.2 ft) to 12 m (38.4 ft) length, driven in a medium consistent silty clay are presented then back-calculated. Depending on their embedment, the piles behaved as rigid, semi-rigid or flexible ones. The tests gave an experimental relationship between the applied horizontal load, the embedment and the horizontal displacement of the pile at the ground surface. A general calculation method, based on Winkler's approach, describes the observed gradual change of the pile behavior from rigid rotation to pure flexion.
