PREDICTION OF TUNNEL-INDUCED DISPLACEMENTS IN HISTORIC BUILDINGS: THE CASE OF CASTEL S. ANGELO

The excavation of bored tunnels in urban environment can cause problems related to the interaction of the tunnel with preexisting structures. This paper presents a case study of a proposed tunnel to be excavated within the foundation soils under a massive monumental building of Castel S. Angelo. The effects of the excavation on the integrity of such a building are evaluated using both empirical procedures and finite element analyses. The advantages and limitations of both methods are discussed and the results obtained are compared. The calculated displacements are then used to assess the likely damage to the building caused by the tunneling operations.
