Previous research on the successful use of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) tendons has only been demonstrated in simply supported prestressed concrete bridges. The next logical step leads to research activities that examine the applicability of continuous externally draped CFRP tendons in multi-span continuously prestressed concrete bridges. This article provides results of research programs underway to investigate the use of different types of fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) rods for flexural and shear reinforcements in continuous concrete beams. An innovative multi-span prestressed concrete bridge system was developed, constructed, and instrumented and is being subjected to static, repeated, and ultimate loading tests using bonded and continuous externally draped CFRP tendons; the results of those tests are also provided in the article.
