RESEARCH ACTIVITIES ON HIGH STRENGTH CONCRETE AND ITS APPLICATION IN JAPAN

The research on high strength concrete to construct prestressed concrete piles, precast or precast-prestressed concrete elements and prestressed concrete structures started in the early 1970's in Japan. The research on high strength concrete continued in the 1980's at several universities and research institutes, to utilize it for the construction of high rise reinforced concrete buildings. However, design guidelines had not been fully developed for reinforced concrete buildings with concrete compressive strengths higher than 35.3 MPa. Therefore, in 1988 the Japanese Building Research Institute initiated the "New RC Project", aimed at establishing design guidelines for buildings constructed using high strength concrete. This paper presents the overview of research work on high strength concrete and its application to building structures in Japan. including the results of the New RC project.
