INNOVATION OF PRECAST PRETENSIONED HIGH-STRENGTH SPUN CONCRETE PILE: LESSONS FROM 1995 HYOGO-KEN NANBU EARTHQUAKE

The 1995 Hyogo-Ken Nanbu earthquake caused significant damage not only to the superstructures but also to the foundation piles. Damage assessment results obtained on the foundation piles created the necessity of re-examination of the seismic design procedures and the mechanical properties of pile itself. In this paper, research results recently obtained by investigating the mechanical properties of precast pretensioned high-strength spun concrete pile were summarized in terms of concrete properties, flexural and shear strengths, the flexural ductility enhancement of the pile and the behavior of pile-to-pile joint, etc.
