CYCLIC FLEXURAL AND SHEAR BEHAVIOR OF HIGH-STRENGTH CONCRETE COLUMNS

This paper summarizes the results on experimental testing of six high-strength concrete short columns subjected to axial load and cyclic shear in double bending condition. Primary experimental parameters included axial load ratio; longitudinal reinforcement ratio; and volumetric ratio of transverse reinforcement. All six specimens developed or exceeded the flexural capacity predicted using ACI 318 code approach. Columns with transverse reinforcement designed following the seismic design provisions of ACI 318 code, developed excellent performance with displacement ductility factor equal to or exceeding 6.0. The model columns with 50% of transverse reinforcement required by ACI 318 code also developed sufficient ductility when the axial load was below 10% of its axial load carrying capacity.
