FATIGUE STRENGTH ASSESSMENT OF I-95 BRIDGE OVER JAMES RIVER

An assessment of the remaining life of the I-95 bridge over the James River in Richmond, Virginia was conducted using two procedures outlined in the AASHTO Guide Specifications for Fatigue Evaluation of Existing Steel Bridges (1990). Strain data were recorded for five fatigue critical details which were previously determined to have finite remaining fatigue lives, based upon an analysis conducted using the AASHTO fatigue truck. The effective stress ranges calculated from the field data were considerably lower than the stress ranges based upon the fatigue truck analysis, and the details were determined to have infinite remaining safe fatigue lives, as defined by the AASHTO criterion.
