PRECISION EXPERIMENTS FOR EVALUATING FINITE ELEMENT (FE) MODELS

Experiments were conducted to evaluate the capability of structural analysts, using nonlinear finite-element methods, to predict the response of reinforced concrete walls subjected to the airblast from the detonation of bare explosive charges. Each experiment involved a detonation in the center bay of a three-bay structure to produce damage to the two interior walls. In each structure, the two interior walls were of identical design for evaluating the repeatability of the structural response. Instrumentation was installed to provide measurements of the airblast environment and the structural response.
