Formulation and performance of water-borne coatings, testing and predicting durability of coatings, and monitoring corrosion are among the topics under study at coatings and corrosion institutes in Europe. This article gives a sampling of studies underway at four European institutes: the Coatings Research Institute (CoRI) in Limelette, Belgium; the Norwegian Marine Technology Research Institute (MARINTEK) in Sandefjord, Norway; the Materials Technology Division of TNO, Institute of Industrial Technology in Eindhoven, Netherlands; and the Swedish Corrosion Institute (SCI) in Stockholm, Sweden. Four current research programs at CoRI concern optimizing formulations for water-borne paints, deformable inclusions in coating formulations, the influence of substrate porosity on the performance of water-borne organic coatings, ultrasonic dispersion of pigments, and water-borne alkyd paints. MARTINEK is conducting a program whose objective is to establish guidelines and recommendations for the handling, inspection, and maintenance of tanks and cargo holds and to test and classify corrosion protection coating systems. TNO is involved in a variety of projects, including low flurocontent binders for water-borne coatings, thin-layer powder coatings, strippable water-borne coating systems, preservation-lubricant primers, hybrid materials, corrosion monitoring, and antifouling systems based on enzymes. SCI carries out research and development in six areas: corrosion protection through organic coatings, corrosion protection through inorganic coatings, electrochemical corrosion protection and corrosion in soils, corrosion of metals in liquids, atmospheric corrosion of metals, and corrosion properties of polymers in process equipment.
