SIMULATION ANALYSIS TO DESIGN CONTROL STRATEGIES FOR FREEWAY SYSTEMS

In this paper, simulations are described that design a control strategy based on the combined action of route diversion and variable speed signalling. An optimal control problem to improve traffic behavior near congestion is formulated. Variable speed signalling and route diversion control laws are determined by minimizing an averaged cost function on the basis of simulation results. Results demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed approach in preventing and reducing congestion
