SANS-SHIPS ACOUSTIC NAVIGATION SYSTEM
The Ships Acoustic Navigation System (SANS) is a new concept for inexpensive, all-weather, precision marine navigation. The design features of SANS such as: a self-contained navigation system utilizing a single bottom-mounted acoustic beacon to service any number of receivers; the cost emphasis transferred to the single transmitting beacon, leaving the receiver simple, compact and inexpensive; all-weather operation in any part of the world, uninhibited either by the hostile surface/atmospheric environment, day or night operation, or the availability of cooperative real estate; and the common baseline design concept that is both useful and economic for all vessels from the sailboat class to the supertanker; all make this system very attractive to a variety of applications. The application to several sets of requirements are treated in this paper. With the growing concern over marine navigation/marine safety on our already overcrowded harbors, channels and sea lanes, there will be many additional and varied applications for the Ships Acoustic Navigation System.
