CALTRANS ACCELERATED PAVEMENT TEST (CAL/APT) PROGRAM - RESULTS FROM TESTS ON ASPHALT PAVEMENTS 1994-1998
This paper describes results obtained during the period 1994-1998 in the Caltrans Accelerated Pavement Testing (CAL/APT) Program, a joint research and development effort between the California Department of Transportation, the University of California at Berkeley, The Division of Roads and Transport Technology of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research of South Africa, and Dynatest Consulting Inc. of Ojai, California. It includes the results of Heavy Vehicle Simulator (HVS) tests on asphalt pavements, both new and overlaid, constructed according to Caltrans specifications coupled with associated laboratory tests and analyses. Results from the CAL/APT Program have led to recommendations related to improved asphalt concrete mix design; the use of asphalt treated permeable base (ATPB) drainage layers; and improved construction practices, including the recommendation for better compaction, the use of a tack coat between asphalt concrete lifts, and the use and development of pay factors as part of a quality control/quality assurance (QC/QA) program for asphalt pavement construction. In addition, the study of the effects of tire pressure and channelized traffic holds the potential for improved mix design and analysis for the consideration of permanent deformation response. Results obtained to date demonstrate the efficacy of government, industry, and academia working together to provide solutions to critical pavement problems as well as the benefits of international cooperation in which technology is transferred among the participants to the mutual benefit of the involved organizations.
