CONTAINER LASHING

The securing and lashing of containers on ship's decks is a difficult operation in terms of the work environment. There are great problems during loading and discharge of containers. Safety arrangements in some ports are poor and the work frequently has to be performed in the dark, under windy and rainy and sometimes icy conditions. Securing of containers is the responsibility of the ship's master, which can mean that there are large differences in the manner in which the operation is effected between individual vessels and shipping companies. Standardization of this equipment is important and must be carried out within the international standardization organization, ISO, in order to get the necessary international impact. A standardization project should comprise performance, design, construction, strength and use of all components used for securing of containers. This paper presents commonly used equipment, proposes test methods and gives advice for dimensions, tolerances and strength requirements.
